Hülya’s manager had deemed it appropriate for her to move to a different department at the workplace where she had been working for years. Although she was not very willing to make this change, she said ‘orders cut iron’ and moved to the new department. After a bit of an adjustment period, the first few weeks were not as she had feared. She had not had any problems with her co-worker or other employees. At first, they would talk about how they could progress and make plans together. Thanks to this, work continued without any disruptions. Zuhal was considered more senior than Hülya in that department, she had two years of experience. When there was a new project or something to be done, Hülya would consult her and work by planning. Hülya was meticulous in her work, she would definitely consult her so as not to make mistakes. She liked to work in an orderly and organized manner.
A new intern started in their department with the opening of universities. Eda was a girl who was eager to learn, respectful, organized and tidy. She tried to do everything she was told and quickly grasped it. Despite her quick wit, she would sometimes get confused about what to do, get confused and make mistakes, even if unintentionally. Because what she asked was different, the answer she got was completely different and irrelevant. Even if she had been working in this job for many years, it was almost impossible for her not to make mistakes in the face of the answers given. Zuhal would never go beyond her own words. She had a structure that never deviated from what she knew, thought that what she said was the best, and did not listen to anyone. She could never bend in the face of innovations. Her general state was ‘this is what I want, this is how it will be, this is how it should be.’ When this was the case, she was tiring both herself and the people she worked with. What she said was always satisfying her own ego. For this reason, it did not affect the other party. There were times when she would give the same reaction even when there was a systemic problem. She would not only not ask anyone, but also prevent Hülya from asking. In this case, the work would be interrupted.
Hülya, who observed the situation for a while, decided to talk to Zuhal about this issue.
“Zuhal, can we chat a bit during lunch break, what do you say?”
“Okay. After dinner, we can have tea at the café across from the company,” Zuhal replied.
They were chatting while drinking their tea. Hülya wanted to start the topic in some way. She was actually a little shy, she was afraid of being misunderstood. But it had become very difficult to work this way. She brought up the topic at the first opportunity.
“Zuhal, I want to talk to you about your approach to Eda. I wanted to talk about this subject after observing her for a long time. If we continue to approach Eda like this, we will not be of any use to her. People come to internships to learn about their future professions and to gain practice. But I have observed that the topics Eda is hung up on and the answers you give are completely different. Naturally, when this happens, it causes her to get confused and confused. For example, while she asks you for a recipe for tarhana soup, you tell her what to wear in winter. When that happens, you do not meet her needs. If we want to be the ones who educate, we need to teach them what they need. Because people forget every piece of information they don’t apply. They become carriers of that information, not live it. And ultimately, information becomes a burden on people.”
Zuhal’s response to what was said didn’t seem to be very accepting. It was exactly what Hülya was hesitant about.
She gave a very short answer by saying, “I don’t think like you. What I told her was exactly as it should be.” Zuhal was not someone who liked to talk a lot.
After this conversation, Hülya remembered the movie ‘War of the Sisters-in-Law’ that was released years ago. There were sweet conflicts between two sisters-in-law, but they would eventually reconcile. The grudges wouldn’t last long.
Relationships were like the sea going up and down. Sometimes emotions surged, sometimes logic took control… It’s all about balance, after all. You need waves and calm water…
Hülya understood that she had hit Zuhal’s ego. She didn’t want to press her any further, but she also wanted to support Eda. ‘The best lesson is to be an example’, she thought. She would work more closely with Eda from now on. Zuhal, on the other hand, understood, even though she seemed to be resentful. She was also aware that she could not be of much help. But she was not used to working with someone, she was having a hard time. She could not see the need because she could not be flexible. It was not something she wanted to explain at length to an intern. Still, her mind was stuck on what Hülya had said.
They both finished their tea in silence and returned to the office. After that conversation, Zuhal tried to be more moderate, while Hülya started working more with Eda. It was as if a silent agreement had been made in order to be more needed… On the last day of Eda’s internship, the whole team went out to dinner. Eda thanked Hülya and Zuhal frequently, telling them that she was very productive. Zuhal, on the other hand, smiled at Hülya with a grateful expression. The silent agreement had worked...
