If People Had QR Codes

The last light of the day was hitting the office window. The sound of piled up paperwork was accompanied by the computer fans shutting down. Aslı’s rush to catch up on work and fatigue had taken over her. The whole day had been busy, she hadn’t been idle even during breaks. While she was tidying her desk, she was complaining to her project partner whom she had been working with for a long time…

“Zeynep, I understand this, such things don’t happen… How sad, how surprised I am,” she said sadly. Her boss on one side, her boyfriend on the other, her father on the other… Aslı didn’t even know who to manage anymore.

“Okay, come on, let’s get out of here as soon as possible. We can talk before I eat, while having coffee. Let’s calm down, my dear..” she said as she took Aslı’s arm.

They had finished their shifts and gone to the market. “What is a yes?” they thought, going from one restaurant to another. They were scanning the elegant menus with the QR code reader on their phones. “No, there’s no air here,” they said and moved on to the next one.

As they walked slowly along the street, Aslı continued the subject “This man says he wants to get married but he doesn’t take any steps. My boss wants a report, what’s the big deal? I didn’t put the photos. I wrote enough and tried to talk him through it. I still can’t understand why… My father doesn’t talk at all, the man’s only problem is the salt content of his food. I can’t get it right… And I talk too much. Why am I interested in these people around me?...”

Zeynep was just listening to her friend. She had obviously become very frustrated in the heat. She were trying to help her by being silent and listening to her, understanding her. She was aware of her needs. She was struggling between a lot of people, she knew she had difficulty with her shortcomings.

“The meat here looks good, let’s see what’s on it,” they kept saying in front of a restaurant. They scanned the QR code and looked at the menu again. They approved and went inside. They placed their orders, and started talking while they were waiting.

“Tell me, Zeynep, what would you do if you were me?” After understanding her friend enough, she stopped and thought. Then she added:

“What would I do? Let’s think about it…” she was silent for a while.

“Come on…” Aslı got impatient when she noticed Zeynep’s sincere smile.

“I’m trying to understand the software…”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s very simple… Everyone has a software they bring into life…” she said and kept her demure calm.

“I don’t understand what you’re saying Zeynep?” she asked.

“I’m talking about the QR code, Aslı… Look, We’ve been to a few restaurants. Where did they upload the menus? Inside the QR code. Aren’t they all the same when you look from a distance? Black dots and lines… We can only understand by entering them with a reader. Appetizers, breakfasts, soups, main courses, hot drinks, cold drinks, desserts… Some only have meat dishes, some only soup. Some cafes only have tea, some have all the drinks. Each selection menu is different. According to need…”

She left Aslı standing for a while, then Zeynep continued:

“People are like this too… There are temperaments that we are born with. These are loaded into that menu. We just need to know how to read them. If I understand the content, I can decide where to eat more easily. If I know the ingredients, I can understand what kind of taste I will get…”

“What do you mean? Should I hold the phone to people’s foreheads and wait for the menu to open?” Aslı asked with a humorous mix.

“Not quite, but you’re close…” she said with a smile.

“I’m so depressed now… I wish people had a QR code too… I could scan it and relax…”

“How nice would that be?” Zeynep looked at her friend with a smile. Aslı paused for a moment, thought and added in surprise:

“Then I would know myself, my friend, my boss, my family, right?”

Zeynep closed her eyes and hummed understandingly.

“And I can manage it, right?... Oh Zeynep, time really flies and what frame is shown to me... Isn't there a reader who can scan a person's code?”

“Of course there is, if you are really curious about people, there is a seminar... You have to ask the right question to the application so that you can get the right answer.”

Aslı asked with the cries of help from her heart reflected in her eyes:

“Will you support me in this?”

Before nodding, Zeynep answered with a hopeful voice, “I would love to.” Then she reached out, took her friend's hand at the table, and answered him with a smile full of ideas.

“Then Who is Who?”
